The Royal Armouries in Leeds is an award-winning museum displaying thousands of   artefacts of arms and armour, showcasing live tournaments and even horse shows!   Don't miss the chance to don a hardhat and head underground to experience life as a miner at The National Coal Mining Museum for England, at Caphouse Colliery near Wakefield. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby traces the story of this famous   seaman and houses many artefacts from his fascinating life. The Turnstone Gallery in Whitby offers the best in contemporary art and craft work from the Coast and Moors   around Whitby. Yorkshire Wolds Gallery & Coffee Shop is a contemporary art gallery on the Yorkshire Wolds, with a changing program of exhibitions throughout the year showcasing the work of Yorkshire Artists. In the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, World of James Herriot in Thirsk   explores the home and surgery of James Herriot, with the centre housing a unique   tribute to the vet-come-author Alf Wight.
