Durham
Nestled within the heart of the historic Durham city centre, you will find the majestic, beautifully restored Durham Market Hall. Without visiting this vibrant market, home to more than 40 local, independent businesses, no trip to Durham would be complete. Discover one-of-a-kind gifts, local produce, hand-selected wines, home décor, fashion, jewellery, toys, collectables, and more. You will also find many services, including phone and watch repairs, key cutting, a tattoo studio, a hairdresser, a body piercer, and a Turkish barber.
Once you've exhausted yourself from all the shopping, you can also treat yourself to a bite to eat and something to drink in the café on the market's mezzanine level that enjoys views across the impressive Victorian-era building.
With a rich history spanning over 170 years, Durham Market Hall is not just a market, but a vibrant community hub. It's a one-stop independent department store, staffed by knowledgeable, passionate traders who are always ready to share their expertise. But Durham Market Hall is more than just a place to shop. Every Saturday, Durham Market Square comes alive with stalls from some of the area's most talented makers, bakers, and dynamic small business owners.
The first Thursday of the month brings the famous craft market to the square. If you time your visit right, you might stumble upon one of the many events throughout the year, including Nostalgia Day, the Children's Book Festival, and the hugely popular Durham Christmas market across the first weekend of December each year.
Maximize your visit to Durham by taking advantage of the city's 'signposters'. Look out for the Durham Pointers in their bright pink tabards and the quirky bike in the Market Place. They are available daily from May to September to assist visitors with their queries, provide local insights, and can also meet coach parties.
